Emoji are ideograms and smileys used in electronic messages and web pages. Emoji exist in various genres, including facial expressions, common objects, places and types of weather, and animals. They are much like emoticons, but emoji are actual pictures instead of typographics. Emoji were first popularized in Japan, and later became popular worldwide after being added to the Apple iPhone in 2011. As of 2019, there are over 3,000 emoji available across a variety of platforms.
