Triple Conscious Theory

Social Media platforms offer their users a virtual escape to a life they wish they  had, or the opportunity to change their identities altogether. There is also the mental  illness aspect of splitting to consider. Two groups of conditions were studied to  understand how individuals' minds respond to traumatic events. Two groups consisted of those who could not process psychical traumas because of external events and those whose traumas were induced simply by being in the same emotional state or position as when the trauma occurred. Neither group was found to have processed these traumas through healthy association. Instead, they disassociated themselves from or buried the trauma within their subconscious. This disassociation resulted in the formation of a new state of mind. It is a process referred to as "pathogenic psychical trauma" or the splitting of consciousness into a dual persona, leaving the user susceptible to a form of  "dispositional hysteria" (Freud, et al., 2004).

Disassociation from the present reality because of the lack of self-worth or envy over someone else’s life has caused many Social Media users to create a digital  personality. The fear of acceptance or approval becomes a motivation to develop this  ideal digital character or avatar. In light of this digital self, in theory, the subconscious  will divide again, resulting in a "third persona”. Consider the three aspects of self  (conscious original personality), the subconscious self (the emotional inner "child"  suffering from both childhood and adulthood traumas), and now the subconscious  "avatar" - which stems from the same root of desires to be accepted, respected, or  approved from the subconscious self. Therefore, the Third Persona is maintained  through a self-imposed image on Social Media, based upon the self, subconscious self,  and the subconscious “avatar.” The Third Persona only adds social pressure on to the user as they make unattainable and unrealistic goals for themselves to be regarded as a noteworthy member of society.

The psyche first splits into dual consciousness (as represented by W.E.B.  DuBois' Double Conscious Theory) before splitting again into triple conscious (as represented by Jonathan Bertrand's Triple Conscious Theory) by way of "inadmissible subconscious thought". Ideas that result in immediate physical consequences do not always cause high degrees of mental activity, which is why their intensity renders them  "inadmissible to consciousness". Of varying intensities, all information is constantly received and then processed into conscious and subconscious thought, effectively causing the psyche to split. Given this information, it's possible that an added virtual personality developed and maintained⏤dependent upon others' adoration can split the psyche once more.
